Meeting Minutes: 10/23/2007

  • We have incoming SLA-SC 1st year co-chairs! Congratulations to Hilary Hahn and Laura Wynholds.

  • SLA-SC is hosting a tour of the Family Resource Center in the new UW Children's Hospital, this Fri. (Nov. 2; today) at 10 am. A group is meeting in the SLIS commons around 9:30 am to take the bus to the hospital. Thanks to Casey for putting this together.

  • The Max Kade Institute Library tour will have to be rescheduled due to Kevin's dentistry work on November 2nd. Look for an upcoming November tour date.

Here is some information about the Institute: Max Kade Institute Library is a resource for those seeking a better understanding of the experience of German-speaking immigrants to North America and their descendants, as well as how those people have helped shape North America and been shaped by it. Our collections include rare German-language items written or published in America, ranging from cookbooks and religious works to family records, historical texts, and literature, as well as books, pamphlets, and articles essential to research in this field. Such materials are significant in helping us understand the experiences, histories, and culture of one large group of immigrants to North America. The Max Kade Institute is dedicated to preserving these documents and serving as a repository for them to ensure that they remain available to scholars and the general public for generations to come. A virtual exhibit of the collection can be viewed online.

  • We need to apply for a continuation of our student chapter status with the Special Library Association. Our annual registration entitles us to $100. We also should look into registering as a UW--Madison official student group.

  • SLA--SC membership is free! If you would like to join, please email claycollins@gmail.com with your name, address, and phone number to be added to our roster.

  • At the 4:30 meeting there was a discussion of ways to make SLA-SC more of a resource sharing community, possibly by creating a listserv or some sort of message board on our website, getting together for informal group discussions, maybe meeting up for dinner or drinks and comparing notes on things people have found, what everyone is working etc.

  • Molly Beverstein, our webmaster, is hard at work on revisions to the new website. Thanks Molly! Revisions are likely to be appearing over the next month.

  • Barbara Arnold's going away party will be held on December 14th from 4:00 to 6:30 in the SLIS Commons.

  • Our next meeting will be November 20th at 12:30 and 4:30 in the SLIS Commons. Hope to see you then!
