During the 2004 - 2005 academic year I will be based at the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) during my Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship year. I will be collecting data for a comparative ethnography. The project is called, "The Academic Library as a Counter-Space in the Lives of African American and Latino Undergraduates". Counter-spaces are defined as "sites where a positive collegiate racial climate can be established and maintained"*. Counter-spaces help undergraduates with their academic and social integration leading to persistence and retention in college. Do African American and Latino undergraduates use the academic library as a counter-space? This is the question that I intend to address in my research as Ford Postdoctoral Fellow working with Professor Daniel Solorzano in the Department of Education at UCLA. Like Dr. Solorzano, my research uses critical race theory as part of my theoretical framework.
