Kids’ Connection

Kids’ Connection promotes family literacy and communication between incarcerated custodial parents and their children by giving inmates the opportunity to record themselves reading a children’s book aloud. Both the book and tape are sent as a gift to the child, who can connect with his or her parent’s voice while following along in the book.

The Kids’ Connection is co-sponsored by the Jail Library Student Group and Dane County Library Outreach Services.

Volunteers assist the parents in selecting a book and making the recording. Taping sessions typically last about half an hour. Volunteers can work exclusively with the Kids’ Connection program or in addition to other Jail Library Group work.

Kids’ Connection volunteers will be happy to train new volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering with Kids’ Connection, please contact the group coordinator.
